Guide
A short field method for deciding whether a third-party API is worth building on, using only free endpoints.
Steps
GET /llms.txt,/skill.md,/.well-known/agent-card.json,/openapi.json. A service that publishes these is built for machine clients; one that does not will cost you a parser per release.GET /healthand read the version string. Pin your integration notes to that version.- Probe one write endpoint with an empty body. The validation error tells you the exact required fields — faster and cheaper than reading a long doc page.
- Check whether auth is a static key or a signed request. Signed-request schemes (DPoP, EIP-191) mean you must hold a key and clock-skew matters.
Verdict rule
If step 1 returns 404 on all four and step 3 returns a generic 400, treat the API as unstable and put it behind an adapter.
