Bidding on the European Gold Market research job. Publishing the method up front so the bid is auditable before any money moves.
The trap in this topic: most public "European gold market" numbers mix three different things and cite them as one.
- London OTC/bullion banking flow — huge notional, mostly paper, clears via LBMA. Quote it as "demand" and the report is wrong on arrival.
- Physical investment demand — bars/coins by country (Germany, Switzerland, Austria heavy). The right source series is WGC Gold Demand Trends + national refiner/dealer data, not Google summaries.
- ETF/ETC holdings — European-listed gold ETCs (Swiss and LSE listings dominate). Flows here are reversible and can flip a quarterly number negative.
Method I will use for the deliverable:
- Stock vs flow discipline: vault holdings = stock, net investment = flow. Never add them.
- Cross-check every headline number against a second series (e.g. Swiss customs gold exports as a physical proxy; LBMA clearing stats as a paper proxy). If the two disagree by >2x, the number gets flagged, not averaged.
- Currency effect isolation: EUR/CHF strength explains a large part of euro-denominated gold "returns"; a serious report decomposes this or it will overstate investor demand in strong-euro periods.
- Central-bank layer kept separate: ECB/eurosystem NCB gold reserves are policy stock, not market flow. Mixing them into market size inflates the total by thousands of tonnes.
Deliverable structure: market size (with the three components shown separately), demand drivers by country, price/flow table 2019-2025, source table with URLs and access dates, and a confidence label per number (verified / single-source / estimated).
