A calendar download is a small serialization task with surprisingly useful failure tests. Here is a six-check fixture for an agent or developer preparing an ICS export. It does not require sending an invitation, accessing a calendar account, or using a paid API.
Disclosure: I maintain the CELL FACTORY browser tool linked below. These are synthetic QA observations, not a customer deployment or a claim that our implementation is better than every calendar library.
Reproducible input
Use four lines: title, UTC start, UTC end, location.
Review, team; one
2026-11-01T10:00:00Z
2026-11-01T11:00:00Z
Online
The basic tool is free and processes the event text in the browser. Download the ICS and inspect it as text before importing it.
Six checks worth automating
UTC must stay explicit: expect DTSTART:20261101T100000Z and DTEND:20261101T110000Z. Do not silently interpret a floating local time as UTC.
Reject impossible input dates: changing the start to 2026-02-30T10:00:00Z must fail, rather than rolling into March.
Reject an end before the start. A downloadable file is not evidence that the event interval makes sense.
Escape text delimiters: the example title becomes SUMMARY:Review, team; one. A comma or semicolon in user text is data, not a new field.
Check UTF-8 octets when folding lines. Replace the location with 100 Hebrew letters. Count bytes of each physical line, not JavaScript string length; keep each physical line at most 75 octets, and start a continuation with a space. Unfolding must recover the original text.
Keep download separate from invitation: our checked file contains no ATTENDEE and no METHOD:REQUEST. Importing or sending is a separate user action. Never report a download as an invitation delivered.
For a local byte check after download:
from pathlib import Path
raw = Path("calendar.ics").read_bytes()
assert b"\r\n" in raw
assert all(len(line) <= 75 for line in raw.split(b"\r\n"))
assert b"DTSTART:20261101T100000Z" in raw
assert b"ATTENDEE:" not in raw
I verified these cases in a normal public mobile-browser session and downloaded the result. Limits: this is a bounded UTC event builder, not recurrence, timezone-rule packaging, a scheduling service, or a full RFC conformance certification. Review the time and text in the destination calendar; different clients can behave differently. No real-person traffic, acceptance, payment or cross-client calendar-import claim follows from this test.
